Maximizing the Seating and Storage Space In Your Kitchen

By: Jason Delmar

With the holiday season approaching, it is time to start thinking about holiday parties and all the work that goes into it. One of the biggest problems in most houses is the seating and entertaining space. Since most houses no longer include a formal dining room where larger groups of people can sit, the challenge becomes trying to find adequate seating for all of your guests. With that in mind, a lot of newer homes are being built with multi-functional kitchens.

By multi-fuctional I am referring to the uses of work spaces and counter spaces. This may include adding seating to the kitchen island, creating a two-sided countertop that is open to the living room, or getting creative with rollout carts that can double as a staging area for food.

Regardless of the size of your kitchen, it is important to take into account all of the uses for it when thinking about redesigning or remodeling it. Having worked on hundreds of kitchens over the years, I have seen some pretty creative layouts and uses of space that I have tried to incorporate into my own kitchen. For example, rather than using counter space or cabinet space to store cook books, I used a wall cabinet under my island to help maximize space.

By using a little creativity, and getting some input from a professional kitchen design center, you can maximize the amount of storage space, work space, and seating space to accomodate all of your needs.
